Hello everyone, If you’ve tapped into this discussion it’s most likely because you’ve been stressed by school, currently stressed, or anticipating the stress as a pre-dent. My name is David Martin, I’m Currently the D23 representative for Mind-Body Wellness at Tufts Dental. In this discussion I’d like to take the opportunity to keep it real and share some tips on how to survive the stresses of Dental School.
Tip 1 - Remember your “why” ! Your reason for joining the dental profession will be essential when times get rough. You must reflect on the times where you prayed and dreamed of becoming a Dentist.
Tip 2 - Prioritize YOU & your health.
I capitalize YOU because people often think if you eat right, work out, and study you’ll never burn out. Well let me be the first to tell you that’s not true. You must maintain optimal physical AND mental health. Dental school is a mental workout 24/7 and if you don’t allocate time to rest you will pay the price. Our minds are one bug muscles and we all know what happens if you work out a muscle non stop with no rest. Tip 3 - Be open minded to wellness practices Meditation & Yoga are good places to start but wellness can be anything you make it. If it clears your mind, takes you away, and makes you happy carve out some time and make that special hobby a priority. HAVE AN OUTLET Tip 4 - make a PLAN.
They say dental school is like drinking from a fire hydrant. However, a fire hydrant can be a great source of water if you make a plan to decrease the pressure. Mapping out your days and making checklist can be an effective way of preventing yourself from getting overwhelmed Tip 5- Put those blinders on like your race horse!
Be aware of things happening around you and listen out for important dates, but don’t compare your learning process and progress to anyone else’s! Everyone must run their own race. Tip- 6 Don’t suffer in silence, ask for help EARLY. Professional school is like no other educational experience. You will need some help at some point, be vocal and get the help you need before it’s too late! It will save you time, energy, and emotions. Tip 7 - CHOOSE POSITIVITY The mind is a powerful tool. “As a man thinketh, so is he” If you fill your mind with positive thoughts and feelings you will soon start to embody them. Trust me when it feels like every professor hates you, there’s nothing like a good ole “I’m destined for this, I can do this” to get you going. Tip 8 - Remember this is Temporary !
You endure four years of agony, for a lifetime of success ! Look at the upperclassman and remember, they more than likely had the same feelings and problems. They still made it and so will YOU! Tip 9 - Self Awareness Understanding and knowing what you’re capable of is ESSENTIAL to your success as a Dental student and soon to be professional. Know home much time you need to allocate for certain things and stick to that allotted time frame.
Tip 10 - VITAMINS & DIET!
As we get older our brains aren’t magical sponges like they use to be. When we were kids we could remember everything but now sometimes we need a boost. Find a nutritional balance that will nourish thy body and mind so you can function at optimal capacity!
